Want to start growing your greens?

The New Bilton Community Association has rented a council allotment since May at the Addison Road allotments near the cemetery. with the aim of making it a community allotment available to those to wish to garden and grow their own fruit and vegetables. The south-facing plot is approximately 12 x 18 metres had been rotovated but the weeds were already germinating strongly and fresh digging, weed removal, rubble and glass clearance were tasks that are continue slowly and steadily. We want to cultivate the soil organically so weed-killing chemicals were out of the question! Which meant hard work on a fairly regular basis. To smother the relentless grown we have covered it with black membrane and carpet samples. We have now worked on about a third of the area. Eventually with some double digging and loosening the soil's surface, we planted rhubarb, several raspberry canes, chives, pumpkins, tomatoes, white sproutings and strawberries, then later some peas. We added fertiliser and we planted and watered when the earth dried, thankful that the tap is next to our plot.

The Community Association have bought a small shed for storage of tools and potting up etc but we need to prepare a solid base for it as soon as possible.

The two thirds remainder of the uncultivated area has just been strimmed thanks to the borough Council so our next step is to spread black porous membrane over that area to deter further growth of weeds and brambles.

What we desperately need is for members from out New Bilton community to share this allotment - to join us in growing fruit and vegetables, salads and herbs, even on a really small scale - perhaps a couple of metres to start with, or possibly a larger area - depending on available time and energy. What a healthy hobby combining fresh air and exercise. And then to look forward to eating what you've grown too! Join us!

The New Bilton Community Association supported Rugby Young Carers by applying for funding to reNEW, the Rugby Borough Council urban regeneration programme for an allotment for an allotment and by giving a hand on the Big Day on 23rd June. The Volunteer Centre found a group of keen posties(well, post office finance people really) from across the country to help them clean up their allotment act. It was a brilliant, sunny day and the posties worked very, very hard as can be seen from the before and after pictures. The Redrow Site Manager, Ian, very generously donated pallets, planks and bricks. Thank you, Ian. A Young Carer was there to plant a pear tree to christen the official opening of the allotment at Paragon Pits Allotments near Willans Green.

This is the shed that was stolen from the New Bilton Community Association webiste in October last year. The Observer covered the story and as a result NBCA was offered a second-hand shed, polycarbonate green house and tools from the Volunteer Centre Rugby's Stepping Stones Project that was closed down. Hope they don't get nicked too!
