A brief guide to New Bilton
About New Bilton
New Bilton is an urban community in the west side of Rugby border by the villages of Newbold, Long Lawford and Parish of (Old) Bilton and the town centre. To view a map of the area please click here. About 3,000 people live in New Bilton and we are melting pot of different cultures and backgrounds.
Originally started in the 1840’s as a place to settle and work in the town many new industries such as the building trade, railways, cement, engineering and service industries. Most of the growth in the area came about at the turn of the century. Early developments were also in response to the high cost of water taxes in the old part of the town.
The housing is a mixture of semi detached and terracing and also contains some large houses built for people who made their wealth in the empire and wanted to take advantage of free schooling at Rugby School.
In later times other people came to New Bilton to start a new life from Ireland, Eastern Europe the West Indies and the Indian Sub-continent also many people from Scotland, Wales and people from virtually every part of England.
Sport has always played a big part in the life of the local community with Rugby’s top football team (VS) Rugby United starting has a street team in New Bilton originally called Valley Sports after the ‘Happy Valley’ the local name for part of New Bilton near the Cement Works. The ground of Rugby Lions (Rugby Union) Club is also situated in the ward.
Serious concerns exist about the levels of pollution in the area but this has not prevented a strong community spirit existing in New Bilton with a high number of Public Houses and Social Clubs in the community. New Bilton people are proud of their community - by no means a perfect community but generally good people with a strong community spirit who are proud of their area of Rugby.
